1)What is the minimum fall for a 4 inch horizontal drainage pipe under the National Plumbing Code of Canada?

A. 1/16 inch per foot

B. 1/8 inch per foot

C. 1/4 inch per foot

D. 1/2 inch per foot

Answer: B

Explanation:

Under the NPC, pipes 3 inches and larger must have a minimum slope of 1/100 (1%) which works out to approximately 1/8 inch per foot. Smaller pipes (2 1/2 inches and less) require a steeper slope of 1/50 (2%) or about 1/4 inch per foot. Too little slope lets solids settle. Too much slope lets water race ahead of solids and leave them behind.

2)Ground conditions prevent the installation of thrust blocks for an underground water service. What is the correct alternative method to restrain the connections?

A. Compact soil within 1 ft. of the fitting

B. Install companion flanges

C. Install continuous rodding (tie rods) across the fittings

D. Connect using flared couplings

Answer: C

Explanation:

When thrust blocks cannot be used (rocky ground, high water table, tight space), continuous rodding or restraint joints are installed to transfer thrust loads across each fitting and back along the pipe. This is standard water main practice and is referenced in most municipal water standards. Companion flanges and flared couplings do not resist thrust.

The relief valve on a reduced-pressure (RP) backflow preventer is discharging intermittently. What is the most likely cause?

A. Test valve 4 is leaking

B. The upstream shut-off valve is open

C. Pressure fluctuations upstream

D. Expansion of water downstream

Answer: C

Explanation:

Intermittent discharge from the RP relief valve is almost always caused by pressure fluctuations upstream — the differential across the two check valves drops momentarily, opening the relief. Steady discharge would suggest a fouled or failed check. This is a classic Red Seal critical-thinking question on backflow troubleshooting.
