Which Path Are You On?

Apprentice writing the IP exam

You have finished your technical training and are booked to write the Interprovincial (IP) exam. Use our 6 full-length tests to pace yourself, find weak areas, and walk in ready.

Trade Qualifier / Challenger

You have around 6,000 hours of documented work experience but did not go through the apprenticeship schooling. You plan to challenge the Red Seal exam through your provincial Trade Equivalency Assessment. Our book covers the full NOA so you can close the gaps before exam day.

Rewriting after a previous attempt

If your last attempt did not go the way you wanted, use our detailed answer explanations to fix the knowledge gaps, not just memorize answers. Every question in the book has a written explanation.

1)What does the “70” in the AWS electrode classification E7018 mean?

A. The minimum tensile strength of the weld metal is 70,000 psi

B. The electrode can be used in all positions

C. The electrode has a low-hydrogen coating

D. The electrode runs on direct current, electrode positive

Answer: A

Explanation: In the AWS SMAW classification system (Exxyy), the first two digits give the minimum tensile strength of the deposited weld metal in thousands of psi. “E70” means 70,000 psi minimum tensile strength. In E7018, the “1” shows it can be used in all positions, and the “8” shows it has a low-hydrogen, iron-powder coating that runs on AC or DC.

2)When welding aluminum with GTAW, what current type is normally used?

A. DCEN (direct current, electrode negative)

B. DCEP (direct current, electrode positive)

C. AC high frequency

D. DC high frequency

Answer: C

Explanation:

GTAW on aluminum normally uses AC with high frequency. The positive half-cycle gives cleaning action by breaking up the aluminum oxide layer on the surface. The negative half-cycle puts heat into the base metal. DCEN is used for steel and stainless steel. DCEP is rarely used in GTAW because the tungsten electrode overheats.

3)A 3-piece 90 degree mitre elbow is being laid out. What is the angle of cut required at each mitre joint?

A. 15 degrees

B. 22.5 degrees

C. 30 degrees

D. 45 degrees

Answer: B

Explanation:

For a multi-piece mitre elbow, the formula is: total bend angle divided by (2 times the number of mitre joints). A 3-piece 90 degree elbow has 2 mitre joints. So 90 / (2 x 2) = 22.5 degrees at each cut. Two cuts of 22.5 degrees at each joint give the full 90 degree bend across the elbow.

Welder Red Seal Exam - Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Red Seal Welder exam?

The Red Seal Welder exam is the national trade certification exam for welders in Canada. It tests the knowledge listed in the Welder Red Seal Occupational Standard. When you pass, you receive the Red Seal endorsement on your provincial Certificate of Qualification. This lets you work as a journeyperson welder in any province or territory in Canada without re-certifying.

The exam has 125 multiple-choice questions. Each question has one correct answer out of four options. The questions are split across the four Major Work Activities in the National Occupational Analysis.

The pass mark is 70%. You need to answer at least 88 out of 125 questions correctly to pass.

You are given 4 hours to write the exam. Most candidates finish before the time is up.

Yes, in most provinces. You need to show around 6,000 hours of documented work experience in the trade through your provincial apprenticeship body. This route is called Trade Qualifier (TQ) or Trade Equivalency Assessment. Check the rules in your province before you apply.

No. The Red Seal exam is a closed-book exam. The only reference materials provided are the formula sheet and the list of acronyms. These are given to you at the exam sitting.
