Master Electrician CEC Exam: Canadian Electrical Code Edition Guide
Master Electrician NEC Exam: What Changes from Journeyman to Master
If you already hold a journeyman electrician licence and are preparing for master, the exam is not simply a harder version of the same test. It tests deeper application, more complex calculations, and areas the journeyman exam touches only lightly. It also tests business and supervisory knowledge in many states. See our Journeyman NEC guide for what the journeyman exam covers. For the Canadian equivalent, see our Master Electrician CEC exam guide. For the journeyman-level comparison between construction and industrial, see our Construction vs Industrial Electrician article.
Who Can Take the Master Exam?
Most states require an active journeyman licence and 2 to 4 additional years of documented journeyman experience. The master licence allows you to own and operate an electrical contracting business, pull permits, and supervise other electricians.
What the Exam Looks Like
80–100 multiple-choice questions, 4–5.5 hours. Open-book and closed-book sections. Pass mark typically 70–75%. Some states add a business and law section.
Where the Master Exam Goes Deeper
Load calculations: commercial occupancy load calculations (Article 220), multi-family, optional methods, demand factors across multiple feeders and services.
Protection coordination: selective coordination for emergency systems (Article 700) and critical operations (Article 708).
Specialty systems: Articles 500–590 (hazardous), 517 (healthcare), 680 (pools), 690 (solar PV), 695 (fire pumps) at greater depth.
Grounding and bonding: system grounding design, separately derived systems, grounding electrode system design.
How to Prepare
Two weeks on Article 220 commercial calculations. Specialty systems until you can answer without looking up. Protection coordination and multi-level device sizing. If your state includes business and law, do not treat it as an afterthought.
