NCCER Millwright Exam: How It Differs from the Red Seal
Millwright Red Seal Exam: NOA Breakdown and Study Strategy
The Red Seal Millwright exam — officially the Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) exam, trade code 433A — is one of the broader trade exams in the Red Seal program. The exam tests mechanical systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, electrical fundamentals, welding, rigging, alignment, bearings, seals, pumps, compressors, conveyor systems, and power transmission. If you hold a Welder or Boilermaker ticket, many of the welding and rigging questions will be familiar — see our Red Seal Boilermaker exam breakdown for comparison.
The Exam Format
The Millwright Red Seal exam has 135 multiple-choice questions. You have 4 hours. The pass mark is 70%. That is about 1 minute 47 seconds per question. Pacing matters.
The NOA Breakdown
A — Common Occupational Skills: ~25 questions (19%). Safety, rigging, trade math (tolerances, fits, trigonometry), blueprints (GD&T), tools and instruments.
B — Power Transmission Systems: ~32 questions (24%). Largest section. Bearings, couplings, gears, chains, sprockets, belts, pulleys, clutches, brakes, shafts.
C — Material Handling and Processing Systems: ~24 questions (18%). Conveyors, pumps, compressors, fans, crushing/screening.
D — Fluid Power Systems: ~21 questions (16%). Hydraulic and pneumatic systems, schematics, pressure/flow/force calculations.
E — Maintenance Procedures: ~16 questions (12%). Vibration analysis, oil analysis, thermography, alignment (dial indicator, reverse dial, laser).
F — Welding and Fabrication: ~17 questions (13%). SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, oxy-fuel, layout, fitting.
Power Transmission (B), Material Handling (C), and Fluid Power (D) together account for 58%.
Where Candidates Struggle
