Red Seal Automotive Service Technician Exam: The Complete Breakdown

The Red Seal Automotive Service Technician exam is rapidly changing. Modern vehicles are as much electronic as mechanical. If you learned on carburetted engines and points ignition, the exam will test CAN bus networks, ADAS calibration, hybrid drive systems, and electronic stability control. For diesel-specific US certification, see our ASE T2 Diesel Engine exam guide. For heavy equipment, see our Heavy Duty Equipment Technician guide.

The Exam Format

[VERIFY] 125 multiple-choice questions. 4 hours. Pass mark 70%.

The NOA Breakdown

A — Common Occupational Skills: ~16 questions (13%). Safety, diagnostic tools (scan tools, multimeters, oscilloscopes), live data PIDs, waveforms.

B — Engine Systems: ~20 questions (16%). Engine diagnosis, cylinder head/valve train, engine block, lubrication, cooling. Both gasoline and diesel.

C — Drivetrain: ~16 questions (13%). Clutches, manual/automatic/CVT transmissions, transfer cases, differentials, driveshafts.

D — Electrical and Electronic Systems: ~24 questions (19%). Batteries, starting/charging, lighting, body electronics, multiplexing (CAN bus, LIN bus). Tied for largest.

E — Steering, Suspension, and Brakes: ~24 questions (19%). Steering, suspension (adaptive/electronic), brakes (disc, drum, ABS, ESC, electronic parking brake), wheel alignment, ADAS calibration. Tied for largest.

F — HVAC: ~12 questions (10%). A/C diagnosis, refrigerant recovery/charging, heating, automatic temp control.

G — Fuel and Emission Systems: ~13 questions (10%). Fuel injection (port, direct), ignition (COP), emission controls (CAT, EGR, EVAP, PCV, SCR), OBD-II (readiness monitors, freeze frame, Mode 6).

Electrical/Electronic (D) and Steering/Suspension/Brakes (E) together account for 38%.

Where Candidates Struggle

CAN bus fault isolation and ADAS sensor calibration. Hybrid/EV fundamentals. Module programming. Pre-2010-trained technicians are most affected.

The Automotive Service Technician Red Seal Exam Prep book gives you 1,000 practice questions across 8 full-length tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many questions?

[VERIFY] 125 multiple-choice. 4 hours. 70% pass mark.

Is ADAS on the exam?

Yes. Recalibration triggers, static vs dynamic calibration, common fault modes of radar and camera systems.

Is it the same as ASE?

No. Red Seal AST (310S) is Canadian. ASE is US-based with separate exams per vehicle system (A1–A9). Red Seal covers all systems in one exam.
