Red Seal Hairstylist Exam: What You Need to Know

The Red Seal Hairstylist exam is unlike most other Red Seal trades — candidates are often working professionals exceptionally skilled at their craft but who have not sat for a written multiple-choice exam in years. The gap between what you can do behind the chair and what you can articulate on a written test is the single biggest challenge. The Cook exam is another trade where theory vs practice is the main challenge — see our Cook exam guide.

The Exam Format

120 multiple-choice questions. 4 hours. Pass mark 70% (84 correct). 75–85% of questions are procedural (describe a scenario, identify the correct action).

The NOA Breakdown

A — Common Occupational Skills: 14 questions (12%). Safety, sanitation, disinfection, ergonomics, consultation, salon management.

B — Hair Cutting and Styling: largest section. Cutting techniques (blunt, graduated, layered, texturizing), finishing, styling fundamentals (face shapes, hair types, growth patterns, elevation angles).

C — Chemical Services: second-largest. Colouring (permanent, demi, semi, lightening), permanent waving, chemical relaxing, keratin treatments. pH scale, oxidative vs direct dyes, disulfide bonds.

D — Hair Additions and Replacements: extensions (fusion, micro-link, tape-in, sew-in), wigs, hairpieces.

E — Hair and Scalp Care: scalp analysis, hair analysis (porosity, elasticity, density, texture), scalp conditions, medical referral.

Where Candidates Struggle

Chemical services theory (disulfide bonds, pH scale, hydrogen peroxide role). Terminology (NOA standard terms vs salon slang). Product chemistry. If you are challenging without an apprenticeship, see our article on trade qualifier vs apprentice pathways.

The hairstylist exam has one of the highest pass rates — see our article on Red Seal pass rates. If you take the time to study the theory behind what you already do well, passing on your first attempt is achievable.

The Hairstylist Red Seal 332A Exam Prep book gives you 1,000 practice questions across 8 full-length tests covering all five MWAs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is on the Red Seal Hairstylist exam?

120 questions across 5 MWAs: common skills, cutting/styling, chemical services, hair additions, and hair/scalp care. 75–85% procedural questions.

Is it the easiest Red Seal exam?

One of the highest pass rates, but it still requires targeted study on chemical service theory and formal terminology.

Do I need chemistry knowledge?

You need to understand pH, hydrogen peroxide in oxidative colour, disulfide bonds in permanent waving, and the difference between alkaline and acid perms. Not a chemistry degree, but more than practical knowledge.
