How to Book Your Red Seal Exam in Every Province

ASE T2 Diesel Engine Exam: What Technicians Need to Know
One of the most searched questions about the Red Seal exam is the pass rate. The answer is not encouraging: nationally, roughly 60% of people who write a Red Seal exam pass. That means four out of every ten candidates walk out without their ticket. And the rate varies significantly by trade, by province, and by whether you are an apprentice or a trade qualifier. For specifics on the trade qualifier pathway, see our article on trade qualifier vs apprentice.
The Numbers
The Red Seal Program publishes exam statistics through the Ellis Chart. The national average has historically hovered around 59–62%. Some trades have higher rates (Hairstylist and Cook tend to be above 65%), while others are lower (Welder and Industrial Electrician tend to be in the low 50s). Trade qualifiers consistently pass at a lower rate than apprentices.
Why Candidates Fail
The Red Seal exam does not test whether you can do the work. It tests whether you can articulate the theory behind the work in a multiple-choice format. Specific reasons include:
1. Studying the wrong material. The exam is based on the RSOS/NOA, not your school notes or company SOPs. Study the NOA. See our specific breakdowns: Steamfitter exam breakdown, Welder exam guide, Carpenter exam breakdown, Cook exam guide, and Boilermaker exam questions.
2. Not knowing the weightings. Every RSOS has a published breakdown showing questions per MWA. Candidates who study all sections equally waste time on low-weight areas.
3. Not practising under timed conditions. You have roughly 1.9 to 2.4 minutes per question depending on the trade.
4. Guessing instead of eliminating. If you can eliminate two options, your odds go from 25% to 50%.
How to Beat the Odds
1. Use the Red Seal self-assessment tool at red-seal.ca before studying. 30 minutes with this tool is worth more than a week of undirected studying.
2. Study according to the weightings published in the RSOS.
3. Work through practice questions with explanations, not just answer keys.
For how to book the exam, see our province-by-province guide.
The Exam Cram Series from Red Seal Training Academy is built around this approach. Every book has 750 to 1,000 practice questions structured to the trade’s RSOS. Over 30 trades are covered.
